I've decided to passionately hate this

I'm pretty mad right now, you guys. And by pretty mad, I mean I'm fuming with unholy rage.

Here's why:

I hesitated to even taint my blog with this video, but this treachery had to be exposed.

So, they're remaking Footloose. This isn't what enrages me. I've known about this for years - did you think I didn't know about this? Did you think I hadn't been following this development? When news first broke like 2+ years ago, I was cautiously optimistic. I was wrong.

It took a couple days and a few torturous views of that trailer for the reality of how bad this situation is to truly wash over me.

First of all, I thought this was supposed to be a movie version of the musical version of the original movie version. It's not. But if it's not, shouldn't be a looser interpretation of the original, bringing it into our decade, modernizing it in a clever, classy way? It's not.

If you haven't seen the original approximately 7 billion times like me, then maybe you didn't notice that they basically took the original script, applied some terrible actors and hip-hop dancing and called it a day. REALLY? That's your revamp? You can't take something that worked perfectly in its context (AKA 1984 with a young, hot Kevin Bacon and a wild but lovable Lori Singer and sidekicks like young brunette Sarah-Jessica Parker and trim Chris Penn) and desecrate it. It's going to be terrible.

And it's not like I'm a stranger to gratuitous dance movies with bad scripts. Ever heard of my DVD collection of the Step Up series? But at least they own what they are: NOT FOOTLOOSE.

Did you know Zac Efron was originally cast as the new Ren? Looks like he dodged a bullet on that one! He probably saw the script and took off running, leaving a Zac-shaped hole in the door behind him.

The only way to realize how awful the new trailer looks is to watch the original movie trailer. Plus I think we all need to cleanse the palates of our minds after seeing that. So here's a movie actually worth watching:

I mean, how can you even COMPARE the two? Watching the original trailer filled me with happiness AND made me even more pissed.

Let's be honest, I'll probably SEE the new one just to know how terrible it actually is. But I'll be mad the entire time.

  1. I think you may be over reacting a little. Looks pretty good to me. One of your Grandpa's favorite movies by the way. Don't think he would approve of the new version though. Dad

  2. Oh MY GOSH!!!! I watched footloose everyday in 6th grade sometimes twice... and even now i watch it once maybe twice a year. i was already annoyed they would want to redo it... it hasn't been long enough and the first version was GOOD!! so much so i had all these dreams that i would marry kevin bacon... and what the heck... did they hunt down the original cars from the first movie?? i'm surprised they didn't head back to spanish fork to film it... the part where the police scraps his face with the license... seriously!! they didn't even use the script.. they handed everyone portable dvd players and had them play it pause and film their "version" i'm mad too...

  3. Dear Brittany I am the only good thing that came out of the 80's. This version of Footloose seems to kick the poop right out of the old Kevin Bacon version. I will go to the opening midnight showing with what I can only guess will be millions of others.
